Student Symposium Uses Mind, Body and Spirit to Promote Well-Being

Monday, May 09, 2016
Categories: Happenings @ TDSB, Inclusive Schools, Student, Parent, and Community

“When we talk about student well-being, we need to look at the whole person. Much like nutrition and sleep, mental wellness needs to be achieved before you can even begin to look at academic achievement. Today we learned how to start the courageous conversation around mental illness and the importance of keeping the conversation going.”

- Lisa Handiak, Principal, Bloorlea Middle School

Last week, more than seventy grade 7-12 students in mid and south Etobicoke attended a Mind, Body & Spirit Student Symposium where they learned about mental health and wellness.

Students listened to two dynamic keynote speakers and mental health advocates, Asante Haughton and Aliçia Raimundo. Both speakers shared about their lived experience and ended with their messages of hope.

Throughout the day the students also participated in hands-on workshops which promoted wellness and positive coping skills.

Tools for All Teens: The students learned how to reduce stress and anxiety through mindfulness meditation and journaling.

Yoga: Lead by TDSB teacher, Michael Azzopardi, the students participated in 40 minutes of relaxing yoga.

Canvas Program: In the Imagine This program students critically examined gender expectations, trans identities, societal pressures, and bullying/harassment, with an emphasis on social media.

Who Are You?: This interactive Toronto Public Health display promoted a healthy body image for all adolescent students.

This exciting day ended with all the students coming together to plan next steps by reflecting on how to share the information and be mental health advocates in their own school community.
