Arthur Ashe once said, “From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.” Students at Glenview Senior Public School recently learned this maxim first-hand when they collected and assembled holiday baskets for 27 families in the community who are in need. All thirteen Grade 7 classes and fourteen grade 8 classes pulled together to donate items for specific family members. The baskets included things such as toys, clothing, gift cards for various retailers, and household items.

Led by school social worker Joanne Kenny and teacher Mina Mastromarco, the Glenview team helped to make this holiday season a memorable one for more than 100 individuals.

“For many years now, Glenview School has participated in this type of initiative and every year I am humbled by the generosity of our school community,” said Principal Mario Sirois. “The positive feedback I received from our area social workers who picked-up these items can attest to how these donations will impact a family and bring joy to the adults and children who will receive such items.”

Each class at Glenview received specific information about a family regarding items that would help them during the holiday season.  Students had two weeks to sign up and purchase an item from the list which would then be compiled together for pick-up.

The Grade 8 prefects stepped up to the plate the day of pick-up and were seen carting baskets and baskets of donations to the cars waiting outside to deliver them to one of the adopted families.

“I felt like I was making a small change in the world for the better” said student Masha Y. “Every clothing item, gift card, and toy donated made a huge impact on the lives of these families,” she added. “This program is amazing, because it helps everyone embrace the true meaning of the holidays: to give.”
