Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Categories: Happenings @ TDSB

Students at Nelson Mandela Park PS knew they were going to be taking part in an assembly with Toronto Raptors President & GM Masai Ujiri on June 19, but what they didn’t know is that he’d be bringing along some of his famous friends to join in on the celebration.

Former NBA player Dikembe Mutombo, Raptors Head Coach Dwane Casey, Toronto Raptor Amir Johnson, and Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Sello Hatang surprised students at the assembly held in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s legacy and the school’s focus on global citizenship and social justice.

It was an inspirational day for students and staff as the special guests shared personal stories about Nelson Mandela's impact on their lives and spoke about the importance of education, hard work and positivity. The Nelson Mandela Park PS choir, steel pan orchestra and African drummers also treated the special guests to a number of performances during the assembly. Check out this video put together by the Raptors about the special day.
