Forest Hill CI Students' Efforts to Help Build School

Students at Forest Hill CI have raised money to help fund the building of a school in Africa. The project was part of a Pencils for Kids campaign in which students wore hand-carved pencil necklaces made from rock by a local artist in Niger.  Pencils for Kids is a charitable organization that provides classroom supplies, programs, libraries and schools to communities in need, so that all children have the opportunity for an education.

The initiative at Forest Hill was led by teacher Robyn Plener, who first heard about the organization  a number of years ago when she saw someone wearing the hand-carved pencil necklace and enquired about it.  When she and her students were researching organizations to support earlier this year, they learned more about the work that Pencils for Kids does and were particularly moved by their mission to make a difference in the world by providing every child the opportunity for an education.

The school went on to raise more than $3000 that will be used to build a new kindergarten classroom in the village of Sorey Ganda in Liboré, Niger. The amount represents more than half of the $5500 cost required to complete the kindergarten. “Our support will contribute to the purchasing of new desks, chairs, school supplies and chalkboards to allow youth to enjoy their access to an education,” said Plener. “I’m so proud of the students of Forest Hill who have reached outside of their own halls and classrooms to extend the gift of education to students in another part of the world.”

In recognition for their support and donation, Pencils for Kids has asked Forest Hill to name the new Kindergarten building, and a dedicated plaque will read “Sponsored by Forest Hill Collegiate Institute.”
