Cedarvale Community School is a small, midtown school that likes to show off its big heart. The school recently held a Dance-a-thon organized by its School Advisory Committee to raise money for the Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS)

Cedarvale CS Principal, Carmelo Nanfara said the staff regularly speak to students about how, even though they are young, they can make a big difference by taking initiative to help others. "The dance-a-thon was a wonderful opportunity for our students to help others in our own city in a very real and tangible way," he said.

Prior to the Dance-a-thon, representatives from TFSS attended a school-wide assembly to help students understand how the foundation helps support children across the TDSB in various ways, through nutrition programs, vision/hearing tests and by providing winter clothing.

Ms Larsen, Cedarvale's school librarian, spoke about how the dance-a-thon could help. "The funds will go a long way in supporting nutrition programs, as well as other important needs," she told the eager students.

Fittingly, on Valentine’s Day, Cedarvale students danced their hearts out. Students wore pink, red and white for the occasion. They had the opportunity to eat cereal and dance to energetic music provided by the Magen Boys DJ. Nigel, a Grade 5 student, was enthusiastic and called the experience amazing. "We were able to have fun and dance for a great cause."

Classmate Allie agreed and added that she "really enjoyed dancing with friends and more importantly, doing it for other students in our own city."

This is the second year in a row that Cedarvale has held a Valentine dance-a-thon for TFSS. The event raised raised approximately $2400 to go along with another $2800 raised last year.
