First TDSB Board Meeting of 2013-2014 School Year

Thursday, September 12, 2013
Categories: News Releases, Board and Trustee Governance

This evening, Trustees with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) met for their first regular meeting of the 2013-2014 school year — starting it with a standing ovation for Trustee Irene Atkinson who attended her first Board meeting since March.

The TDSB received 311 FIT (Feed-in Tariff) contracts from the Ontario Power Authority in August. At the first Board meeting of the year, Trustees finalized plans for moving forward this fall with the installation of solar panels and critical roof repairs across the TDSB. Information on individual projects will be announced in the coming weeks.

In the wake of the tragic deaths of two TDSB students, Trustees requested that Chair Chris Bolton enter into immediate discussions with the City of Toronto, Toronto Police Service, and the other Toronto school boards with regards to measures that could reduce the traffic risks to students on their way to and from school, including the increased use of crossing guards.

Trustees also voted to ask the Minister of Education to seek a legal opinion and decision with regards to the seniority hiring provisions of Regulation 274. They directed the Board to implement safeguards in the hiring process to ensure fair and transparent hiring and promotion practices.

 Quick Facts

  • TDSB received approximately 22% of the total capacity for Ontario that was approved as part of FIT 2.0.
  • Lower costs for solar technology means that there is still a strong return on investment given the lower FIT rates.

“We are thankful to have Irene Atkinson back in the Boardroom where she belongs; where she has always been a strong and passionate advocate for students.”

- Chris Bolton, Chair, TDSB

We’re looking forward to another successful school year and have already hit the ground running. The new solar agreement approved by Trustees will see millions of square feet of school roofs repaired or replaced.”

- Donna Quan, Director, TDSB
