TDSB Director John Malloy Provides Update on Drowning Investigation

Thursday, July 20, 2017
Categories: News Releases

As Ontario Provincial Police and the Office of the Chief Coroner continue their investigations into the tragic drowning of Jeremiah Perry in Algonquin Park, so too does the Toronto District School Board. As part of the TDSB’s ongoing investigation, we are in the process of interviewing students, volunteers, and staff who went on the trip, and staff who authorized the trip.

Given our expectations that students pass a pre-departure swim test, we are also interviewing those who conducted swim tests and are reviewing all related swim test documentation. At the same time, I have instructed staff to immediately review our practices and procedures with regards to excursions – particularly those that involve “high-care” activities such as swimming and canoeing. We are looking at a number of areas including clarity of information, required documentation, and the approval process among others.

I, along with the C.W. Jefferys CI principal, continue to update Jeremiah’s family on our progress with the investigation prior to the release of any information. The TDSB’s commitment remains the same as it has been from the beginning — we will continue to be diligent in our investigation and will cooperate fully in the OPP and Coroner’s investigations.

The C.W. Jefferys school community, along with school and Board representatives, will be attending a vigil for Jeremiah at C.W. Jefferys this Friday, starting at 8:30 p.m. Our thoughts continue to be with Jeremiah’s family and ‎we will continue to provide support and comfort for them during the difficult days and weeks ahead.
