Apply to be a Trustee – Ward 17, Scarborough Centre

Note: Trustee David Smith was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament in the recent Ontario general election. As a result, Mr. Smith has resigned from his position at the Toronto District School Board and the trustee position in Ward 17 – Scarborough Centre is vacant.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is currently looking for a qualified candidate to fill the trustee vacancy in Ward 17 – Scarborough Centre. This individual will serve a term of approximately three months, ending on November 14, 2022. Please note that a trustee will be elected as a result of the Municipal Election on October 24, 2022 and will assume the role as of November 15, 2022.

Application Deadline: Monday, July 25, 2022, at 2 p.m.

Application Process

The following documents are mandatory to be considered for the Application Process:

  1. Declaration of Qualifications – download the Declaration of Qualifications form for Ward 17 (Scarborough Centre). You must complete this form and have it authorized by a Commissioner of Oaths.

    Commissioner of Oaths Definition: A formal appointment, or commission, governments give to individuals empowering them to certify the oath of another upon document. To find a Commissioner of Oaths, you can:
    • Contact your Councillor: Councillors are commissioners for taking affidavits by virtue of their office. It is entirely at the discretion of a Councillor whether or not they wish to commission documents
    • Contact 211 Toronto: Enter “commissioner of oaths” in the search field to find a list of agencies that provide this service or dial 211
    • Contact Directory Assistance: Dial 411
    • Search the web: Enter “Commissioners for Taking Affidavits in Toronto” in the search field of your web browser
  2. Letter of Intent – submit a letter of intent, including the following:
    1. Interest in becoming a trustee in Ward 17 – Scarborough Centre
    2. Demonstrated passion for publicly funded education
    3. Understanding of trustee responsibilities both to constituents and the achievement of the Board’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan
    4. Understanding of accountability for use of public resources
    5. Connection to the communities in the Ward of Scarborough Centre; lived experience in the community is an asset
    6. Knowledge of key TDSB education priorities, including the Board’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan, student achievement, equity, and well-being
    7. Understanding and commitment to principles of equity, inclusion, anti-oppression, and anti-colonialism, with particular reference to marginalized communities
    8. Understanding and acceptance of time commitment for trustee responsibilities
  3. Standard resume to be submitted, including the following:
    1. Address and contact information
    2. Work experience
    3. Community involvement, especially with families, children and youth
    4. Education system or public policy related experience

Original paper copies of these three documents must be provided in-person to the TDSB office located on the first floor at 5050 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario, on or before the deadline. Please note that an agent may provide the original documents in-person on behalf of the applicant. The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Only those candidates invited for an interview will be contacted by the Board or its representatives. The successful candidate will be appointed at a meeting of the Board at the end of August 2022.
