January 27, 2023: International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Friday, January 27 is designated by the United Nations General Assembly as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD).

On this annual day of commemoration, ceremonies are held to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism.

At the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) the Jewish Heritage Committee is hosting the following events for TDSB staff and students: 

Pinchas Gutter: In conversation with TDSB’s Shari Schwartz-Maltz

Pinchas Gutter, a Holocaust Survivor and contributor to the Azrieli Foundation’s ‘The Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program’ and USC Shoah Foundation’s ‘IWitness: Dimensions in Testimony’ will be sharing his memories and experiences with TDSB classes in-person and virtually. 

This webcast is open to TDSB classes Grades 6 and up from 10:15 a.m.-11 a.m. on Friday, January 27.

Willesden Reads Concerts Jan 31 & Feb 1

Thousands of Grade 6-8 students across Canada will attend the Canadian Premiere of Willesden READS! Live in concert and virtually on January 31 and February 1. The theatrical performance is based on the best-selling book, The Children of Willesden Lane, which tells the story of the power of music and how one teenage refugee, Lisa Jura, held onto her dreams, survived the Holocaust and inspired a generation.

Willesden Reads: Hold on to Your Music with author Mona Golabek 

The Jewish Heritage Committee is providing TDSB educators of Grades 2 to 5 a read aloud video and performance by author Mona Golabek and Lee Cohen of the children’s version of The Children of Willesden Lane - Hold onto your Music.

The interactive pre-recorded session is guided via a slide deck, which includes resources and several arts integrated lesson ideas created by Lindsay Rosen, TDSB music teacher, with Catherine West, Pedagogy Leader at the Oscar Peterson School of Music (Royal Conservatory of Music).
