Greenwood Secondary School's Mission Statement

Greenwood Secondary School is one of the oldest schools in North America designed specifically for new immigrant, high school aged students. We welcome you to our small, nurturing community. Our English as a second language (ESL) school provides you with a special opportunity to gain English language skills in a welcoming environment while you earn your high school credits. We provide learning activities to meet your individual needs. We help you prepare to move to the high school of your choice and complete the necessary high school credits to earn your diploma. We work together to ensure that you develop the necessary self-confidence, interpersonal skills and knowledge to be a successful student in Canada.



 

 

 

Guidance Program

We want you to succeed and we help you every step of the way. After a successful stay at our school, you will be ready to select a mainstream or alternative high school that meets your academic needs. Continuous Intake

We welcome students who are new to Canada throughout the year.  If you are between the ages of 13 and 21, we may be the school for you.  We can help you develop the four language skills in English essential to thriving in Canada, including listening, speaking, reading and writing.

We help you adjust to school in Canada with unique guidance programs:
 - Awareness to self and others
 - Educational and career awareness
 - Study and communication skills
 - Respect for self and for others
 - Qualities for personal growth
 - Field trips and career day activities

Language Enrichment Academic Program (LEAP)

We offer the Literacy Enrichment Academic Program (LEAP) for students with gaps in their education.  Contact the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to enroll in our LEAP program.

Our school year is divided into two parts:
  - Semester One - September to January
  - Semester Two - February to June
 
When you have successfully completed our English as a second language course, you will be ready to move to another secondary school to complete your Ontario high school Diploma

Facilities

We maintain technical facilities to support you in our programs. We have computer labs, a gymnasium, a cafeteria and a life skills classroom with kitchen facilities. We are home to a specialized English as a Second Language (ESL) library filled with many resources that can help you learn English.

We operate on a foundation of respect and our code of conduct supports how we are to treat each other.  We truly are a multicultural school where everyone is respected.  We learn from each other in a safe and caring environment.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Field trips and extra-curricular activities are an integral part of our program, providing further opportunities for students to gain self-confidence and to achieve cultural orientation. Our program is flexible so that pupils may experience continuous progress.

In terms of intramural and after-school sports, we offer: badminton, basketball, cross country running, table tennis, skating, soccer and volleyball. 

Students are also able to join several clubs while at Greenwood: art, dance, cross country, computer, homework, outdoor, peer tutoring, photography and student council.   

With over 70 countries represented, we are a truly multicultural school. We celebrate many cultural holidays, including Eid, Diwali and Christmas. We have assemblies celebrating Latino, African and Asian Heritage Months.

WHAT SETS US APART

At Greenwood we provide a small, safe, nurturing environment exclusively for English Language Learners at levels A through D, ESL support in all of our classes, a comprehensive math program including upgrading from grade 3 to the 3U level, and a wide variety of courses specifically geared for ESL students.  Students get the opportunity to show leadership in student council and school events.  We offer a free breakfast program and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.  Our teachers and Guidance Counsellor support you with the transition to your home school and your next steps.  We provide a wonderful introduction the Canadian way of life - and we are easily accessible via the TTC subway (Greenwood Station).

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

At Greenwood, students and parents have access to settlement workers and other community resources. We also bring in several special programs for the students and their families such as Intergenerational Partnerships, Access Alliance, and the Newcomer Orientation Program.
