West Rouge Junior Public School's Mission Statement

West Rouge Junior Public School, originally built in 1954 by the Ontario County Board of Education, was transferred to the Scarborough Board of Education in 1976. It is located in the south eastern corner of the Toronto District School Board beside the Rouge River and Lake Ontario. Several additions have been added to the school.

West Rouge Junior Public School is strongly supported by its well-established community. We are committed to providing a healthy learning and working environment by promoting respect, civility, safety, responsible citizenship and academic excellence. We strive to educate the whole child and therefore offer a balance of academic and co-curricular programs in a welcoming environment.

Character Development Education

We host one recognition assembly per month recognizing the efforts and accomplishments of our students in all different endeavours.  While character is a part of that assembly it is also examined in the classrooms during book talks and literacy reviews.

Music

Music and performance is a passion at West Rouge.  We offer band, strings, recorder and choir, and in alternate years we present a spring musical.  Each year we have a theatre group in to present to our students.

Scientists in the School

All of our classrooms participate in this program which brings scientists into the classrooms to explore such topics as Structures, Forces, Flight, Space etc.  The SAC also provided funds to our staff to purchase scientific consummable to assist the junior classes with hands on learning.

Athletics

The teachers at West Rouge are committed to offering our students many opportunities to participate in athletics while attending our school.  Teams operate for both boys and girls in the following sports: soccer, slo-pitch, volleyball, basketball, cross-county and track and field.

First Lego League

We have once again started up our Lego Robotics program!  This unique program allows many of our junior students to be involved with computer programming at a fairly sophisticated level.  The team works for months problem solving and creating presentations that culminate in our participation at the annual Robotics Tournament.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

At West Rouge, we take great pride in our extra curricular programs. From sports teams to the ECO team, there is something for everyone. The clubs and teams we offer our students include, primary and junior folk dancing, the student leadership team, choir, the eco team, intermediate band and strings and numerous opportunities to participate in both inter-mural and inter-school sports teams such as soccer, volleyball, basketball and track and field.
Parents support the arts, sports, literacy and countless other activities such as Scientists in the Schools where we always need extra hands! We are all committed to raising life-long learners, critical thinkers and responsible citizens.

WHAT SETS US APART

We provide a wealth of extra curricular activities to encourage and highlight students' strengths and areas of interest. We believe in a curriculum that supports art based learning (music, drama, dance, visual arts) and integrates technology (computer lab, Smartboards) and problem solving throughout. We offer a growing number of extra curricular sports opportunities for our junior students as well as a houseleague program. We believe in strong relationships and active involvement between home, school and the community to support our students, families and West Rouge staff as we work and learn together.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The School Council is a dedicated and hard-working group of West Rouge parents. They work with the school to establish policies and solve problems that will ensure the optimum learning and safety of our students. They generously support the curriculum through their extensive fundraising activities, the largest being a Fun Fair held in Spring. Our parent volunteers provide important support to our reading and writing programs in the classroom, assist on fieldtrips and help with scientist in the school activities.
