Henry Kelsey Senior Public School's Mission Statement

Henry Kelsey Senior Public School was named in memory of a young employee of the Hudson's Bay Company who was sent into the barren lands west of Hudson Bay to look for customers.  In later years, he became the governor of all the Company's posts on Hudson Bay.

Henry Kelsey Senior Public School was opened in 1971. We welcome a diverse population of students drawn from seven feeder schools.

More Information About Henry Kelsey Senior Public School

Our School

Staff and students create an environment rich in diversity and opportunity. There is an emphasis on students striving to become lifelong learners, to actively engage in their learning and to aim for excellence. Many opportunities are provided for our students to develop a sense of responsibility and to learn how to problem solve when conflicts arise.

Schools use assessment information and information from other sources to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input is obtained from a variety of sources such as student feedback, student assessments, teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way, schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a supportive and challenging learning environment for all our students.

Personal And Social Responsibility Program

In our Personal and Social Responsibility program we:
-provide leadership opportunities for students through SAC
-teach students about their role in the community and in the world through schoolwide social justice initiatives
-reinforce 'Kelsey's Code of Conduct' and the 'Safe School Policy'
-teach students about character traits through  guidance assemblies.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Henry Kelsey's excellence in academic, athletic and artistic pursuits has played a significant role in school life.  We are proud of our diversity and the inclusiveness of our community.  We place a strong emphasis on all curriculum areas with a focus on literacy and mathematics.  An important part of the education of our students is the development of strong, caring and involved individuals.  We have worked to create the environment in which our students can become not only better learners, but better people.  Our staff, and students, are passionate about all they do.  The staff is committed to providing opportunities for all students within the classroom and through a rich extra-curricular program that continues throughout the year.  Our school has a very active Student Advisory Council (SAC).  The SAC is involved in community outreach and fundraising projects such as: collecting food for the Agincourt Food Bank, the Terry Fox Run and raising funds for school field trips.  Henry Kelsey students are involved in Junior Achievement.  We value and promote visits and presentations from the business community.

WHAT SETS US APART

Several areas set Henry Kelsey apart from the rest. They include our guidance program, our  instrumental program and our drama, dance and visual arts program.  Guidance provides a service to students, parents and teachers. Henry Kelsey’s guidance counsellor specializes in helping students to make decisions about their personal and academic needs.  Our guidance counsellor co-ordinates the Teacher Advisory Program along with initiatives such as secondary school choices, and the course selection process for students moving from Grade 8 to Grade 9.  The students at Henry Kelsey have the opportunity to take part in our instrumental program.  Instruments may be borrowed from the music room on a daily basis.  Students are involved in creative drama and dance programming in the classroom.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Henry Kelsey parents are very supportive and demonstrate this by attending our Curriculum Nights, Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews, Orientation Day, Transition Nights and our Winter and Spring events.    We encourage open and on-going communication with our parents through meetings, phone calls, emails, website and the use of the student agendas.  As an integral part of our commitment to developing a sense of social responsibility, we encourage students to take leadership roles in the community. We also invite the community to participate in school initiatives.
