Language and Literacy

At George Peck P.S., we believe that a solid foundation in literacy is critical. Through the Teaching Learning Critical Pathways, our teachers are continually honing their own skills in response to their students' achievements in order to improve our students' literacy skills. We use DRA and CASI assessments, as well as data from report cards and EQAO, to inform our practice. As of September, 2015 we became a Model School. This means that our staff and students get extra support to provide our students with more of what they need to succeed.

The Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab pre-school program, an integrated program for disabled and able-bodied children, has been located at the school for almost 30 years.

In July 2006, the Wexford Community Childcare Centre moved into George Peck P.S. Wexford Childcare, Holland Bloorview and George Peck staff work together as part of the City of Toronto's Best Start initiative, to help prepare our youngest students to have the "best start" possible to their school careers.

About Our School:
The school was built in 1955 and named after Mr. George Peck, a dedicated past Trustee and the first Chair of the Scarborough Board of Education. It is located in the Toronto South East quadrant of the Toronto District School Board.

Math, Science and Technology

The ability to be numerate is critical to success both within school and in the larger community. George Peck students receive a strong foundation in their numeracy skills. Students at George Peck have an opportunity to develop their technological skills in the classroom as we offer a variety of wireless technology. There are opportunities built into the school day designed to support students who require extra support and accommodations to meet their academic potential.

Student Leadership

At George Peck, we believe that part of our mandate is to develop well-rounded students who are prepared to be productive and positive citizens in a democratic world. We offer leadership opportunities to our students through Prefect duties, Eco-Schools, Office, Student Announcers, Parking Lot and Playground helpers.

Student Athletics

George Peck students have an opportunity to participate in a variety of house league and school-based competitive teams throughout the year. Our coaches strive to instill in our athletes a sense of ethics, personal responsibility, and good sportsmanship skills, in addition to improving their athleticism.

Environmental Education

Taking care of our environment is a critical component of our day-to-day functioning at George Peck. Part of our students' focus is on reducing their carbon footprint. Students participate in a variety of environmental intiatives, including Eco Club, litterless lunch, outdoor education, and community clean-ups.

The Arts

We provide a multitude of opportunities for students to develop cognitively, emotionally, and socially through application of extracurricular activities focusing on the arts. Our clubs include arts and crafts, chess, cooking, knitting, band and choir. We host annual productions including a Talent Show and/or a musical.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

While supporting students to achieve their academic potential is our primary focus, students also have a multitude of opportunities to participate in extracurricular and leadership opportunities. Our Student Council is actively involved in providing our population with Spirit Days and dances. Our Athletic Council provides leadership to our extensive extra-curricular and house league athletic programs. Our Eco-Club focuses on encouraging our community to reduce their carbon footprint and acting as ecological leaders. Students fundraise in the fall for the Canadian Cancer Society through the Terry Fox Run, and in the spring for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart. In addition, smaller fundraisers are held throughout the year to support a variety of causes and student initiatives.

WHAT SETS US APART

We have three Special Education Intensive Support programs at our school to serve students who have been formally identified with learning disabilities through an IPRC process.

The Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab pre-school program, an integrated program for disabled and able-bodied children, has been located at the school for almost 30 years. In 2006, the Wexford Childcare Centre moved into George Peck P.S. Bloorview, Wexford Childcare, and George Peck staff work together as part of the City of Toronto's Best Start initiative, to help prepare our youngest students to have the 'best start' possible for their school careers. We also have subsidized before-and-after school Kindergarten day care. Our regular stream and special education students are given opportunities to work with our youngest citizens through programs like Reading Buddies.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Our facilities may be used in the evening to provide social and recreational programs to both children and adults: currently, group piano instruction is provided one evening a week by the Canadian Bureau for the Advancement of Music (CBAM). George Peck School Council meets on a regular basis to provide input to school operations, fundraise for enriched programming and facilitate community involvement. The School Council has collaborated with staff on matters of community concern. Currently, our School Council is involved in fundraising to support school improvements.
