Gateway Public School's Mission Statement

Gateway Public School serves Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 students in the vibrant neighbourhood of Flemingdon Park. We are situated in a lush ravine setting, with a protected playground that offers a variety of play options for students.  Our school population is close to 900 students. Gateway is a diverse community, a representation of the multicultural centre Toronto has become. We celebrate and are dedicated to promoting student success in an inclusive and respectful environment. We hold high expectations for the achievement and the conduct of our students based on the key components of mutual respect, responsibility, safety and commitment to the betterment of self and the broader community.

A Community School with Involved Parents

Our supportive School Council is an asset. Pizza Lunch fund-raising allows us to support school excursions. The Volunteer Readers Program supports our youngest readers. Throughout the school year, parents have opportunities to learn about their child's education (e.g.Literacy & Math Nights) and attend parent workshops. The Pride and Heritage Daycare provides various child care options. Gateway houses International Language Saturday Programs for 10 different languages.

The Arts at Gateway

Students are exposed to the Arts at all grade levels through programming from specialist Music and Drama and Dance teachers, and Orff itinerants. Drama is taught in our unique drama/dance studio. Students annually attend the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Ballet, and a variety of performing artists visit the school. A school musical is produced each year.

Healthy, Active Living

Physical activity, nutrition and wellness are school foci. We offer a variety of non competitive sports and intramurals. Gateway participates annually in sports such as baseball, cricket, bordenball, volleyball, basketball, cross country and track and field.

Community Connections

We utilize a variety of facilities within walking distance of the school: the Dennis Timbrell Library, Playground Paradise and the Ontario Science Centre. Mooreland's offers an after school and lunch time programs. Students skate frequently at the Angela James Arena.

Building a Respectful School Climate

Gateway integrates character education and equity into curriculum. Equity themes are coupled with TDSB character traits as topics for reading, writing and oral communication. Monthly assemblies recognize students of character and classes share their classroom explorations of the topics. We strive to support a school culture that celebrates diversity and mutual respect.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

At Gateway Public School, students are able to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities such as, Drumming, Crafts and Folk Dancing. Cross country running, track and field and a variety of sports activities are also available . Each year, our school musical production appeals to many of our students. Students are given many opportunities to give to others: Terry Fox Run, Jump Rope for Heart, UNICEF, our annual food drive for the local community, fundraising for world issues. To support our greening efforts, students participate in the primary or junior EcoSchool Clubs. They are involved in outside planting and work to educate other students about the environment and school efforts to reduce garbage and energy use. We are proud of our caring school environment and our peaceful playground. Students are taught a variety of outside games and are provided with sports equipment that allows them to play actively with each other. Teachers are committed to supporting the social and emotional development of students in the classroom and on the playground.  A daily, healthy snack is provided for all students.

WHAT SETS US APART

At Gateway we are proud of our grade team planning and consistent programming from one classroom to another. Special education and ELL teachers are assigned to each grade level. This model provides excellent and ongoing communication between the speciality teachers and the classroom teachers and allows us to better support all students in their learning. Our school focus is Numeracy and staff are examining the problem solving method of teaching mathematics, which supports higher level mathematical thinking for students. We provide students in grades 3 - 5 with the opportunity to participate in external Mathematics Competitions, an enrichement activity which encourages parent involvement. There are interactive SMART Boards for each grade and we will be integrating this new technology into our teaching practice. Gateway Public School is a Platinum Eco school, the highest level of achievement. We are proud of our litterless lunches and other school wide efforts to reduce energy use and create a "greener" school environment.
