Thistletown Collegiate Institute's Mission Statement

Thistletown Collegiate Institute (TCI) is a safe and caring school dedicated to student success. Our longstanding tradition of academic excellence and rich co-curricular programs make TCI a very rewarding place of learning. We honour all pathways and provide great opportunities for all students to prepare for university, college, apprenticeships and the world of work. In addition to a very strong core program, we offer our students terrific opportunities in the Arts, Physical Education, Co-operative Education and Technology including  three Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Programs as well as a Gifted and Enriched Program.  Many of our graduates go on to post-secondary institutions with prestigious awards and scholarships.

At TCI, we offer a full range of courses in our academic programs. Business, computer and technology, programs, including Robotics, are part of our compliment of courses. E-Learning and Continuous Intake Co-op courses also provide different methods to engage students in learning. TCI has great technology shops and a fully equipped industrial kitchen to support our very successful Food and Hospitality Program and our Robotics Program. Our literacy initiatives focus on enhancing the essential skills in reading and writing so that our students are better prepared upon graduation.  We have a strong Mathematics and Science program, with a cross curricular focus on building numeracy skills across the curriculum.  

Athletics and TCI

In athletics, many of our teams are actively involved in competing for TDSB championships. There are also great opportunities at Thistletown for students to play soccer,  ultimate frisbee, volleyball, cricket, badminton, basketball, softball, baseball, and track and field as well as a number of other sports and activities. For recreational athletes, there are various co-curricular activities open to all students. These, together with our leadership programs and a vast number of clubs and activities, offer many amazing opportunities for our students to grow, obtain leadership skills and develop as individuals.

A Broad Selection of Choices

At TCI, we offer a complete range of academic, business, and technology programs including E-Learning and Continuous Intake Co-op. Our literacy initiatives aim at developing interest and skills in reading and writing and our retention and remediation initiatives help our students stay in school and be successful.

Math and Science

TCI has a strong Mathematics and Science program dedicated to student success, including math support at lunch and after school.  Our excellent teachers are committed to providing students with the skills required to pursue further studies in all areas of science, advanced mathematics, engineering and the health and medical fields.

Food and Hospitality

Food and Hospitality at TCI provides our students with opportunities to learn new and exciting skills in a fully equipped kitchen under the direction of a highly qualified teacher-chef. Our dual-credit partnership with Humber College allows students to earn high school credits and advanced placement college credits at the same time. 

TCI Environmental Club

TCI's Environmental Club (TEC) is  proud to announce its ECO Schools Platinum Status.  The TEC recycles unwanted electronics and accessories in partnership with TDSB and Tech It Away. This along with our printer cartridge and battery re-cycling program makes our students aware of some of the many ways that they can make a difference in protecting the environment.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Great opportunities exist at TCI for our students to participate in a variety of clubs and activities thanks to a dynamic Student Activity Council.  Regular events include the CN Tower Climb, Ski Trips, Cuts for Cancer, Semi-Formal, Dances, Arts Night, Prom, Spirit Week and Leadership Camps. 
 
Our sports clubs and teams demonstrate good sportsmanship and positive reinforcement; but we are also proud of our accomplishments.  From boys basketball to indoor and outdoor cricket and track and field, our athletes are outstanding.  Our recent accomplishments include West Division Champions in Boys Hockey and Senior Girls Basketball as well as Varsity Football Finalists.
 
Students have excellent opportunities to participate in a number of exciting clubs at Thistletown.  TCI's clubs include the Empowered Student  Partnership Committee, TCI Tech Crew, Pipers, Environmental Club, TCI Ambassadors, Drama Club, Duke of Edinburgh Leadership Club and Robotics. Welcome Aboard Week Activities (WAWA) is a week of non-stop inclusive fun and games for grade 9 students to make them feel welcome at TCI.  
       

WHAT SETS US APART

We have a long tradition of academic excellence. Each year, many of our graduates are accepted into the college or university of their choice, supported with prizes and scholarships. Last year, we celebrated 124 graduates. Nearly three-quarters moved on to university to continue their education.
 
Our students have access to supportive and confidential assistance from a wide range of professionals. These include attendance counsellors, child and youth workers, social workers, child and youth counsellors, psycho-educational consultants, a special education consultant, a public health nurse and substance abuse counsellors.
