James S Bell Junior Middle Sports and Wellness Academy's Mission Statement

James S. Bell Junior Middle Sports and Wellness Academy is located in Long Branch in West Toronto.  Promoting the development of healthy and active lifestyles for students is the focus of this unique program. This whole-school approach supports students in developing an appreciation for athletics, health, physical activity and lifelong wellness.  The students at JSB participate in daily physical activity, learn about the connection between good nutrition, physical activity and being better learners, enjoy lots of opportunities to participate in a variety of intramural and interschool programs.  Students are part of a culture that balances academic excellence with personal leadership, character development and innovation.
 

A vibrant and busy Parks and Recreation Community School is located in our school and provides a variety of afterschool, evening and weekend programs for children and adults.

Back on Track Program

Now in year five, all of our middle school special education students workout on classroom treadmills and recumbent bicycles.  A healthy body definitely leads to a healthy mind at JSB!

WHAT SETS US APART

Now in its' third year, our "Back on Track" program continues to flourish.  This fitness program allows all of our Special Education students to work out on treadmills and recumbent bicycles on a daily basis.  
 
While academics will always be the focus at James S. Bell, we are fortunate to have one of the most complete athletic programs in the city.  Participation in intramural and extracurricular sports is excellent and has led to several regional, conference, and city championships in recent years.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Volunteers as assistants in the school's Intervention Reading Program.
Teacher interns from the University of Toronto/OISE and Early Childhood Education students from Ryerson University.
Toronto Public Health - Health programs.
Junior Achievement Programs (Gr. 7-8) (education and career planning activities).
Maintain communication with Community Police.
Tutor in the School Program to help at risk students with academic difficulties.
School Advisory Council hosting monthly meetings and actively raises funds for the school.
Regular parent volunteers assist in the classrooms and with our Intervention programs.
James S. Bell enters the annual Lakeshore Santa Claus parade attended by students, parents and staff.
Co-plan and co-organize with school staff a Spring Fling fundraiser that involves local businesses.
