Sept 8 2015: Message on incident near Central Tech

September 8, 2015

Dear Neighbour and School Community,

This afternoon, shortly after 1:00PM a stabbing took place near Central Technical School. A 19-year old student was injured and taken to hospital for medical attention. It is our understanding that he will recover. Our thoughts are with the student and his family at this time.

As a precaution the Toronto Police Service and the school implemented a Lockdown following the incident, in accordance with TDSB procedure. The Lockdown has since ended.

Police are still investigating this incident and we encourage anyone with information to call them at 416-808-1400 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS (8477).

I have been in touch with the school, local city councillors, and Toronto Police Services to ensure we are working together to support our community, and share important information and updates.

The safety of our students and community is always a top priority. We have a number of initiatives, programs, and policies that contribute to a caring and safe school.

When an incident like this happens so close to a school, it can be very upsetting.  Accordingly, we have arranged for social workers to be available to support students, teachers and staff beginning early tomorrow morning, for as long as needed.

We thank Toronto Police and Emergency Medical Services for their quick action, and also commend our staff and students for their co-operation. We practice emergency situations every year hoping never to use them but always prepared to do so if necessary.

Together, look forward to supporting each other to ensure our school communities are welcoming and safe.
