IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES
Market Lane Public School is a relatively new school (1992) located on The Esplanade in the St. Lawrence Community, a mixed social and economic community that is still undergoing development. The school is housed in a building complex which includes a community recreation centre and apartment dwellings. The school administration team co-ordinates with the staff of the St. Lawrence Daycare, the St. Lawrence Community Centre, and 222 The Esplanade to ensure on-going and reasonable implementation of the Shared Use Agreement between the Board and the City and other users in this complex.
Arts Education
We are an arts focussed school and to support this initiative, Market Lane has nurtured strong partnerships with Soulpepper, the Young People's Theatre, Impact Dance, Prologue for the Performing Arts, and Inner City Angels. We offer instruction in strings, brass, choir, African Drumming, and Steel Pan. Students watch many plays and theatric productions throughout the year. We also believe in having strong parent and community ties and have developed successful partnerships with SAS and General Electric.
Arts Alive
Arts Alive is an annual event whereby community and parents present a culturally diverse selection of arts activities for all students in the school to participate in. Dance, visual arts, cooking, music and other activities are offered. This full day event is always well received by students, parents and the community.
Physical Fitness
At Market Lane we offer many physical activities for students. All students receive weekly swim instruction. We have an extensive lunch time non-competitive program. As well, we have many competitive teams for students to participate in. Our basketball program has been particularly successful, winning divisional and city championships in the past few years.
Technology
At Market Lane we use technology to improve student learning and engagement. All classes have digital document cameras (Elmos) connected to data projectors to use for instruction, a computer lab for all students to access and Smart Boards in the class. As well, we have a Robotics Club and Math Science Investigations structures materials.
Arts and Leadership Opportunities
Students can join a choir, the African drumming ensemble, Steel Pan, Strings, Brass or our Robotics club. We have an annual Winter concert, an Evening of African History, and a Spring concert or play which provide many opportunities for students to participate. Intermediate students can join our Portfolio Club in drama or KidsNow to develop their leadership skills.
Nutrition Programs
We have an extensive nutrition program at Market Lane providing a hot breakfast, healthy snack and hot lunch for all students. General Electric has generously provided funding to ensure that our Breakfast is free. All food served is halal and follows the Canada Food Guide.
