Integrity, Humanity, Scholarship

Whitney is located in a well-established residential district in the Rosedale/Moore Park area. The first school was built in 1926 and the current building in 1964. Some parents and grandparents of our students also attended the school. In May 2001, we celebrated the school's 75th anniversary.

  • The school population is approximately 300 and most students live in the school's catchment area.
  • The school has a child care centre and an outstanding record of parental involvement.
  • Staff and parents work together to support School Improvement
  • Many unique initiatives provide enrichment opportunities and experiences for all students.
  • Many opportunities for students to be involved in outreach programs and give to other communities.

Student Leadership

At Whitney, we believe in student leadership. Student leadership is waking up in the morning and being the person who takes small steps to make lives of others better. Students at Whitney are encouraged to make a difference in the school and community by being positive role models, supporting and assisting others. Students in grade 6 act as peer mentors, helping in the office area, evening events and initiating games with younger children on rainy days. Students in the junior division also act as reading buddies and house league coaches for our younger students. Read more about Student Leadership

Sports and Physical Education

All students benefit from physical education classes taught by a gym specialist. Currently, the gym teacher organizes and runs an extensive lunchtime and early morning house league program for students in grades 1 to 6, using grade 6 students as peer mentors . We have a number of interschool sports teams coached and coordinated by the gym teacher and various staff members.  Grade 5 and 6 students are also coaches and officials. Most students participate in cross country and the Terry Fox Run. All students prticipate in the Jump Rope for Heart which is a part of Healthy Choices week, linking healthy eating with exercise.

Enrichment programs such as visiting artists and scientists are funded by the School Council. These valuable enhancements provide hands-on learning that complement the classroom curriculum and are popular.  Every classroom has at least two visiting artists & or scientists each year providing a full day program in both visual arts & science complementing both curriculums.
