Blake is a Model School for Inner Cities
The essential components of a model inner city school are: innovative teaching and learning styles, supportive services to meet the social, emotional, and physical wellbeing of our students, school as the heart of the community, commitment to share successful practice and research, review and evaluation of students and programs. Our model school goals are academic progress, enhanced personal growth, expanded staff opportunity to meet and grow professionally, direct opportunities for parent involvement and partnership with the wider community.
Mission Statement and Philosophy
At Blake, our mission is to provide a caring, safe and bully-free environment, which meets the intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs of our students. With the assistance of our families and greater school community, we are committed to support our students and lead by example so that they reach their full potential. Our code of conduct clearly states that all students have the right to be heard and valued, must respect themselves and have the responsibility to follow staff directions.
Literacy
Based on our data, we are addressing the needs of our students by: implementing integrated units based on Enduring Understandings, participating in the Primary Reading Intervention Project for struggling readers, co-teaching with the Literacy/Numeracy coaches, providing reading recovery support, and providing literacy tutoring after school.
Numeracy
Our Math coach facilitates professional development for the staff on assessment tasks and moderated marking. The teachers access the numeracy resource room to support their program. Our Math network meetings revolve around best practices. Our Family Math Night provides an opportunity for hands-on learning and education around numeracy.
School Climate
Our objective is to foster respect for each other through team building and cooperation in sports teams, clubs and award assemblies. Anti-bullying workshops and in-class dialogue are becoming a foundation for students accepting one another. We use our peacemakers, TRIBES and character education to continue to create a fun, risk taking, positive school culture.
School Council
Blake's School Council is made up of teachers, parents and the principal. The mandate of this committee is to support student learning by providing opportunities through fund raising events like pizza lunches, bake sales, hot dog lunches, movie afternoons and our Spring Fair. The monthly calendar and newsletter are produced in English and Chinese.
