West Rouge Junior Public School, originally built in 1954 by the Ontario County Board of Education, was transferred to the Scarborough Board of Education in 1976. It is located in the south eastern corner of the Toronto District School Board beside the Rouge River and Lake Ontario. Several additions have been added to the school.
West Rouge Junior Public School is strongly supported by its well-established community. We are committed to providing a healthy learning and working environment by promoting respect, civility, safety, responsible citizenship and academic excellence. We strive to educate the whole child and therefore offer a balance of academic and co-curricular programs in a welcoming environment.
Eco School
We currently are a certified gold ECO school and are planning activities and programs that will enable us to move forward to become a platinum ECO school in the near future. We have a group of very dedicated students, parents and staff who are working together to achieve this goal. We are dedicated to reducing paper and energy consumption as well as creating a greener schoolyard for the students to play and learn in. Our SAC has created a website and now weekly notices are sent via e-mail to 97% of our families!
Character Development Education
We host one assembly per month not based on individual recognition but rather on delving deeper into each character trait to firmly ground the student's knowledge and understanding of each trait.
Music
Music and performance is a passion at West Rouge. We offer band, strings, recorder and choir and each year we present a spring musical. This year we will be performing "This Is Not a Test"
Scientists in the School
All of our classrooms participate in this program which brings scientists into the classrooms to explore such topics as Structures, Forces, Owls, etc.
Spelling Bees/Speech Arts
This year was our first year to participate in the Can West Spelling Bee program. We held a school wide written bee, a primary spelling bee and a junior spelling bee. Students from grade 1 to 6 participated.
This year our students also participated in a school-wide speech arts contest for the first time in recent memory!
Family Nights
West Rouge held it's first Family Literacy night in the fall. It was an opportunity for parents to come and learn some at home strategies to help them read with their children. We plan to have an Family Numeracy Night in the future and to continue demonstrating current teaching strategies to our parents as needed.
