Learning for Life, Striving for Excellence

Kennedy Public School, which officially opened in 1988, is named for the James Kennedy family who immigrated to Canada from Scotland and settled in this northeast area of Metropolitan Toronto. The school serves approximately 550 students, many of whom speak English as a second language.

Kennedy Public School is committed to promoting learning as a lifelong experience; striving for excellence in all students; and, within a safe and caring environment, teaching our children to be socially responsible citizens.

New Iniatives at Kennedy

This is going to be an exciting year at Kennedy with two new technology projects planned. The biggest will be the implementation of the new laptop project. The school has received 40 laptops and a cart to store and charge the laptops. The cart is mobile so that the laptops can move from class to class as needed. The second new technology initiative to be explored is the use of 19 IPads that our new family of schools has in its possesion. Teachers will submit proposals to a coordinator within the family and may borrow the IPads and cart for a six week period.

We will continue to implement literacy and numeracy initiatives. We have also purchased 2 more Smartboards so that every grade and also the library has a smartboard to be used for our initiatives. We will continue with our Character Education/Social justice activities by making connections on a Global perspective.  Our ESL students will continue to be assisted in their acquisition of the English language through various after school programs. We are now striving for the next level as an ECO school and continue to participate in the Fit For Life program. We continue to make strong connections with our Sister School in China.

Our goal is to foster respect for each other through team building and cooperation in house league activities, sport teams, clubs and recognition assemblies. We promote our Character Education program along with our Anti-Bullying initiatives in the school, our Student Leadership Group helps the community and our Me to We club raises funds for world-wide efforts.

To enrich our students' lives, we encourage involvement in the Arts. We have choirs, bands, folk dance and a dance club which allows our students to perform numerous times throughout the year. Students and their teachers have painted murals in the local park, a nearby mall and our 25th Anniversary Murals. We also participated in painting a "Chair with Flair" twice.

Community and Fundraising Events

Our goal is to continue to support our local Heathwood Ratepayer's Association in its effort to improve the beauty of our community and to keep it clean. We have worked together to paint murals, remove graffiti, plant bulbs, trees and clean up garbage in our parks. Our students will continue to support our local food bank as well as other community organizations as needed.
