THE OAKRIDGE WAY
The Oakridge Way is the cornerstone of our school code of conduct and is in line with the Board's Character Development Program. Our plans for this year are to teach the principles in The Oakridge Way and recognize these positive behaviours through assemblies, newsletters, daily announcements and awards. We encourage parents from all our cultural communities to become actively involved in the education of their children through Family Literacy/Math nights, School Council, and school functions. Oakridge supports the services of a Settlement Worker to help newcomers. We continue to foster partnerships with many community organizations.
Oakridge Works Hard to Make a Difference!
For a few years in a row now Oakridge has reached Platinum Eco Status. That is not an easy feat. The entire staff and student body work very hard to ensure that garbage is separated into food waste, recyclables and garbage. We are constantly being educated on the effects of waste on the environment. Environmental students help out in the lunch room, classrooms and in our beautiful "Star Garden" courtyard.
School Focus
Through Oakridge's School Improvement Plan our priorities for this school year include increasing support for our at risk students. We continue to strive to improve the delivery of reading and writing instruction in all grades and to build instructional capacity amongst teachers to improve professional practice in all subjects. The teachers use a variety of texts, resources and manipulatives to support instruction in all strands of science and math. Oakridge adopts a school-wide safe schools approach and uses Character Development, Bullying Prevention and Intervention initiatives consistent with the Oakridge Way. Read more about School Focus
Literacy
At Oakridge we continue to provide increased access and circulation of resources in the Library and adjoining computer lab. We plan to expand the use of literature circles in the primary and junior divisions to encourage students to talk about their reading in thoughtful ways. Our teachers utilize data from our DRA and CASI assessments to help drive their instruction. Read more about Literacy
Math, Science & Technology
Teachers use various texts, resources and manipulatives to support instruction in all strands in mathematics to improve student achievement. Science and technology are used to integrate measurement and problem solving activities into the curriculum. Junior Division students are engaged in web-based projects using Information Technology and the Library Resource Centre.
The Arts
Oakridge offers an Arts Curriculum that includes Drama, Dance, Visual Arts and Music. Many of these subjects are supported in the variety of co-curricular clubs offered during non-instructional time. Oakridge has a very talented band and choir. The students in Grade 5 showed tremendous dedication and commitment in their participation the DAREarts Jazz Choir this year. Read more about The Arts
Specialized Instruction
At Oakridge we are fortunate to have the Literacy Enrichment Academic Program (LEAP). It is an accelerated program for students aged 10 - 20 who have recently arrived in Canada with limited prior schooling. A variety of special education programs and services are offered to meet the needs of all students, including students with exceptionalities. Read more about Specialized Instruction
