James Shaver Woodsworth (1874 – 1942) was a pioneer in the Canadian social democratic movement. He cared for the poor and the working class for 20 years before leaving the church to lay the foundation for, and become the first leader of, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), a social democratic party that later became the New Democratic Party (NDP).
Toward Excellence With Strength, Courage and Wisdom!
J. S. Woodsworth Sr. P.S. is a collaborative, innovative, Future Aces school dedicated to the intellectual, physical, emotional and social growth of our diverse learners. Within a safe and welcoming environment, based on academic excellence and personal responsibility, our school community strives to prepare all students for success in a rapidly changing world.
J.S. Woodsworth opened in September 1969 with 628 students in attendance. The school was named for James Shaver Woodsworth, a noteworthy Canadian parliamentarian, pacifist and champion of social justice.
Our Philosophy
At J.S. Woodsworth we espouse the philosophy, ' Strength, Courage, and Wisdom---Toward Excellence!'.
As Future Aces we learn the creed written by Herbert H. Carnegie and each day the staff and students of Woodsworth strive to 'Live the Creed!".
Our Students
Our school population is approximately 330 students, representing a rich diversity of cultures. Woodsworth receives students from four K-6 schools: Bendale Jr., North Bendale Jr., Bellmere Jr. and Wm. Tredway Jr. Our community and student population is diverse for a number of reasons. We are a dual track school, with some of our students receiving instruction in French. As well, the portion of our students for whom English is a second language increases each year. Both of these factors add to the richness and diversity of the student body.
Our Policies
Our policies are located at the front of the School Agenda and in a First Day Package given out at the beginning of each year. These include: our Code of Behaviour, a Student Contract and a Parent Pact which outline the rights and responsibilities of students, staff and parents; School Routines; Homework Guidelines; Textbook and Library Text Policy and the Internet Policy.
A Safe, Caring and Equitable Community
At J.S. Woodsworth, we have made a commitment to ensuring a learning community that is safe and respectful to all. We strive to provide our students with an environment and a curriculum that is reflective of our diverse community and classrooms where the opportunity for all to learn is paramount.
Co Curricular Opportunities
Students at Woodsworth are provided with many opportunites for co-curricular involvement. Athletics, both intramural and TDESSA sponsored; choir, band, drama, newsletter, yearbook and chess clubs are just a few of the choices that Woodsworth students have.
French Immersion
J. S. Woodsworth is a dual track school with a number of our students receiving instruction in the core subjects in French.
