A.Y. Jackson (1882 –1974) was a Canadian painter and founding member of the Group of Seven. These artists were considered bold, because the Canadian wilderness had previously been considered too rugged and wild to be painted. In 1967 he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
A. Y. Jackson's Mission Statement
At A. Y. Jackson Secondary School we develop our students into informed, literate, decision-makers who become well-rounded and caring global citizens. We achieve this through dedicated delivery of varied programming with an emphasis on excellence in the classroom and beyond. A full range of academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular and support programs is offered to meet the needs, interests, skills and strengths of our school’s diverse student population.
2012-2013 Features
Advanced Placement courses are offered in Grade 12 Economics, Calculus & Vectors, Biology and Physics.
Enriched Programs in Visual Arts, Math, Computer Studies, and Physics are available for interested students.
International Language programming is available in French, Japanese, Latin and Spanish.
The Arts Department offers the World Music Program, Dance, Drama, Photography and Film.
Results Oriented
Each semester more than 350 students achieve a place on our Honour Roll, with an average of 80% or higher. Most students study mathematics and science, and more than half of the school's 1085 students participate in visual arts, dramatic arts, musical groups and sports. A. Y. Jackson has a rich tradition of extra-curricular involvement and community service which complements the classroom learning experience. Our students are well-prepared to continue their studies in university and/or college.
Mathematics and Science Programs
Many of our students excel in provincial, national and international competitions, consistently placing in the top ten percent. We offer a diverse range of courses at the applied, academic, enriched and advance placement levels thus meeting our students' needs in all pathways.
Health and Physical Education and Athletics
Our program emphasizes participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students have the option of participating in intermural programs or trying out for one of our team sports which include badminton, soccer, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, ultimate frisbee, swimming, track and cross country.
Specialist High Skills Major
The Biotechnology SHSM is a ministry-approved program that allows students to focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests while meeting the requirements of the OSSD. Students will complete a career-specific practicum. Completion of the SHSM requirements results in the award of a Red Seal Designation on your OSSD. (http://shsm.ayjscience.ca)
New to Canada? New to English?
We welcome students from all over the world, offering extensive support programs for students who are new to Canada. In addition to our full English as a Second Language program, we offer support classes in Science, History, Drama, Civics & Careers, General Learning Strategies, and Family Studies. We also host a Newcomer Orientation Program for students & families.
