Home Of The Lions
Elia Middle School is named after the original farming community of Elia. It is a school with a highly diverse student population. Our Grade 6 students are primarily from four elementary schools: Derrydown, Lamberton, Sheppard and Stilecroft.
Students get opportunities to be involved in a variety of co-curricular activities. Consistent Codes of Conduct, Dress and an Anti-Bullying Policy are in place. A Special Education Program called the Home School Program (HSP) is in place to improve the achievement levels of students according to their abilities. Our staff, parents and students take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. They work together to achieve excellence in all areas.
The Pride of Elia
Elia prides itself in promoting a safe and caring learning environment where student voices are heard. Elia has a selected student counsel that works in partnership with the Ministry of Education to write proposals to address issues that impact them in education. The counsel also voices their opinions on how the issues should be addressed.
Apart from student voices, Elia is an ECO friendly school where staff and students work together to promote a greener environment. We also take pride in our arts programs: band, violin, steel pan, choir and dance.
School Focus for This School Year
Our school focus for the 2011-2012 school year is improving student achievement in Literacy, Numeracy with emphasis on a Safe and Caring environment as well as Pathways by ensuring smooth transitions from Feeder Schools to Middle School and from Middle School to Secondary Schools.
These transitions will ensure that students are adequately programed for, to meet their academic needs in receiving schools. This year's school focus will help to raise student achievement in all grades.
Sports at Elia Middle School
Elia's Health and Physical Education programs are designed to meet the physical needs of students by promoting physical fitness and life long learning on important health issues. We offer a variety of extra-curricular activities. Among these activities are Girls and Boys Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Dance, Badminton and Ultimate Frisbee.
Technology at Elia
Elia students are exposed to the use of technology in the classroom through the use of computers and Promethean boards during instructional time. Students use technology to expand their knowledge and skills across the curriculum. Some of the areas that they explore using information technology are: literacy, media, numeracy and other interrelated subjects.
At Elia we offer a Special Education program called Home School Program (HSP) for students who are identified using a formal review process. The committee that identify students' exceptionalities and reviews students' progress is called an Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC).
Elia works with community partners to enrich students learning experiences throughout the years. This year we are pleased to continue our partnerships with the Hammer Band, York University, Seneca College, The Achievers and other community agencies to promote student success.
