MISSION STATEMENT:
We are united in our mission at Kingslake P.S. to ensure success for all students by providing learning environments that are safe, peaceful, nurturing, and respectful of diversity.
Kingslake Public School is located in the northeast quadrant of Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue. The school first opened on December 10, 1964. The school serves approximately 350 students representing 25 different language groups. Approximately 80% of the students speak English as a second language.
At Kingslake
It is our privilege to provide opportunities and programs for children to work within a diverse, multicultural environment. At Kingslake, we emphasize the idea of peace and look at ways we can create and support it as citizens of the world every day. Our children learn to celebrate and value our similarities and differences. We celebrate the success of all children.
Literacy at Kingslake
Our students and teachers have access to many wonderful sets of books to use in guided reading activities. As a school, we also purchased books to be used for Read Aloud and Independent Reading in all our classrooms. A block of time is devoted to balanced literacy in every classroom. Students are involved in Reading and Writing workshop activities during this time.
Math at Kingslake
With the introduction of The Early Math Strategy, the way in which we approach mathematics has changed a lot! Instead of simply filling in the answer 3 + 9 = ___ , students are asked to show how they got the answer, or explain their thinking. Our goal here is to recognize different types of learning and help students understand HOW they achieved a particular answer.
Community Partnerships
We believe it is important to work with our community to provide our students and families with the essential services they require. We presently have partnerships with the The Ontario Early Years Centre; Settlement and Education Partnerships in Toronto (SEPT); Gibson Retirement Residence and VIC Outreach.
The Arts at Kingslake
We celebrate the arts every day. We do all kinds of art activities. We do clay too. We even write our own scripts. Every year, we have a big school-wide show! We also have a Talent Show. Students are also exposed to special performances by professional artists.
