Ernest Public School is located just south of Finch Avenue between the 404 and Victoria Park. The school was built during the 1970's, and now serves about 250 students representing many different cultural and language groups. At Ernest, we set high expectations for learning in academics and the arts. We believe in promoting student leadership opportunities such as Student Council, and offer varied co-curricular activities. At Ernest we value parent partnerships to support student success, and promote regular and ongoing communication, e.g. daily use of student agendas. As a community partner, our school hosts an International Languages program, as well as many Pleasant View Community Association special interest activities.

Early Learning Program

Since September 2010, Ernest P.S. has provided an Early Learning Program, which is the Ministry of Education's provincial initiative that brings full day learning to the kindergarten program.  Teachers and Early Childhood Educators work in partnership in the classroom to help young students learn and grow.  This team approach brings out the best in children through activities and play, guided by a new curriculum written by the Ministry of Education.  Early learning has long term benefits for the development of academic and social skills, and eases Gr.1 transition.

School Focus For This School Year

At Ernest we have high expectations for learning, and support student achievement through many strategies.  In particular a significant focus at Ernest is Student Leadership. Throughout their junior years, students have the opportunity to work towards our prestigious "Eagle Award", a culminating recognition of the students' leadership initiatives, and is presented at Grade 6 Completion. Many of our student leaders participate in our very active Student Council, while others may choose to be involved in our Eco Team.  As a Gold Eco School, Ernest is striving for Platinum Eco status by June 2013. We are very proud of our student leaders.

Co-Curricular Activities

At Ernest we believe in providing our students with a rich, varied co-curricular program which allows pupils to express personal interests, as well as develop team building skills and a knowledge and appreciation of the arts. Co-curricular activities include sports (volleyball, basketball, soccer, x-country) and arts (folk dancing, choirs, games club, boys' reading club).

Special Education and Learning Support Programs

At Ernest we have a variety of programs and resources to support the needs of all learners.  We have a half day Home School Program,  a special education resource program, as well as an ELL (English Language Learner) program. We also have previously had Reading Recovery and Early Reading Intervention programs, and our experienced teachers continue to use those strategies.

International Festival

In the spring of 2012 we held our fifth annual International Festival.  Parents experienced a journey to many countries and enjoyed the wealth of learning demonstrated and presented by our students.  Passports are issued and stamped at every "port of call". This year an amazing fashion show, featuring the traditional dress of many countries, was a festival highlight.

Eco Team

Our Eco Team comprises staff, students, parents and volunteers. Our Eco Team is very student driven. As we are striving to be a Platinum Eco school this year, students were highly involved in our waste audit last fall. Students also have the responsibility for our green bin and recycling programs and initiate many ideas to improve the environment, e.g. bulb planting.
