Excellence in Education

The staff at Elkhorn is dedicated to providing an excellent education for all students.  They regularly participate in professional development in all areas of the curriculum.  They provide a positive, nurturing environment where students feel safe to take risks in their learning.  Grade teams work together to plan their programs to meet all students' needs.  Teachers often team-teach.  They also assess with grade team partners to ensure that work is assessed the same regardless of which class the child is in.  Based on this assessment, teachers plan for further learning.

Community

We pride ourselves in being a community-centred school. The positive, welcoming community is evident the moment you walk in the school and see the beautiful mural that all students, parents, and staff created. There are many opportunities for students to learn to be positive contributing members in the school community. Parents are actively involved in their children's education. Our teachers are a lifelong learners who care deeply about the students and treat them as their own children.

Special Education

Children have unique needs.  We endeavor to meet the needs of all students through our excellent special education team. Special education teachers work closely with homeroom teachers to provide programing that helps to reduce the gap in learning.  Math and language blocks are aligned so that students are learning similar curriculum at the same time as their peers.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

We have many students who are new to Canada or who come to school with little to no English.  Our ESL teachers work with the homeroom teachers to provide programs for students at their stage of language learning.  Students are sometimes withdrawn from the classroom in order to group them with other students at the same level.

Music

Students from all grades participate in a well-balanced music program which encourages the development of musical skills, creativity, and performance practice.  There is a yearly concert which features these skills along with participation in music festivals for our choirs, Orff programs, and recorder programs.

Integration of Technology

We have a number of interactive white boards (SmartBoards and Promethean Boards) which are used throughout the school.  All  classrooms are equipped for using this cutting-edge technology.  Computers are in every classrooms, and we have a computer lab in the library which is regularly used by many classes.
