Soar to Excellence
Amesbury Middle School prides itself in serving students from an increasingly diverse community. Our students, parents, staff and community reflect many cultures which provides our school with a richness that is nurtured and cherished.
Amesbury students are continuously challenged to "Soar to Excellence". Each student has the opportunity to receive a curricular-based program, which is challenging, supportive and reflects each individual's personal learning style and needs. Students have the opportunity to develop their literacy and social skills within all aspects of the academic program, the elective courses and co-curricular activities.
Supportive Programs
In addition to our core programs, the school provides: English as a Second Language (ESL), Literacy Enrichment Academic Program (LEAP), adapted education for students with Developmental Disabilities (DD), modified curricula and instruction for students with Learning Disabilities and Mild Intellectual Disabilities (LD and MID), Home School Programs (HSP) for those students who require additional support with Literacy and Numeracy skills, as well as a Behaviour Program that focuses on life skills and academic support for students with social-emotional challenges.
Pride in Our School
Our excellent school facilities provide the backdrop for student achievement in the academic subjects, the arts, physical education and the co-curricular activities. Our school staff, parent volunteers, and community representatives are all vital human resources through which our students receive support in their daily learning experiences at Amesbury Middle School. Through the Student Council, the Student Ambassador's Club, the School Advisory Council and the School Leadership Team, priorities are being established with respect to the development of pride in the school and the students' accomplishments.
Student Engagement
Involvement in school life takes many forms and, from the very first assembly in September, students are encouraged to become involved in activities outside of the classroom. For example, we're very proud of our student athletic program with a number of staff volunteering to coach our students and develop life-long sports skills and attitudes.
Student Leadership
Not since birth has the adolescent brain gone through greater growth. Our students are truly receptive and ready to "take charge" and, each year, a number are nominated by their peers to represent their class and a few are motivated to become elected to the Student Council Executive. Their personal priorities vary each year but it's exciting to watch the brain in action!
Our Students Care...
Our students care...about the environment and we're excited that students find great meaning and fulfillment within the demands of our Environmental Club. Several teachers act as staff advisors in areas such as Recycling, Gardening, Facilities and the Science Club. We're proud of our latest "silver" EcoSchool designation and look forward to continued growth in this area.
Extra-Special Features!
Amesbury is an OFIP (Ontario Focused Intervention Program)school and a Model Middle School (that's a program unique to the T.D.S.B. called Model Schools Inner Cities) It's our 5th year with OFIP and our 3rd year with MSIC. Our staff receive additional professional development and support for programs and activities and - it's wonderful! - our students benefit!
