Take care of yourself and take care of each other!
Ecole Elmlea Junior School is located in the Rexdale community at the 401 and Islington Avenue. The school opened in 1952 for English learners in the local attendance area. In 1976, French Immersion students from various home schools located between Eglinton and Steeles Avenue began to attend. Elmlea serves close to 530 students representing a number of different language and cultural groups. It is a dual track school offering both regular English and French Immersion programs and remains the French Immersion Home School for 21 feeder schools. Students at Elmlea are exposed to learning through the arts. We have a bilingual Primary Choir and our Junior Choir is involved in the TDSB/U of T Choral Project.

Elmlea Kindergarten and grade 1 classes benefit from the From 3 To 3® program which applies current research to take a comprehensive approach to children’s language, social understanding and literacy competence. Four stages, from age 3 to the end of grade 3, are designed to ensure that children have: the language ability necessary to communicate and learn; the theory of mind or social understanding to think about what other people think, assess inferences, and interpret the perspectives of others in order to reason and judge the meaning of communication, reading and writing.
School Focus
Elmlea continues to host a 'Welcome to Kindergarten' morning to communicate with families of pre-school children and help them prepare for school entry; to focus on providing workshops to teachers on teaching mathematics through problem solving; to focus on TDSB Character Trait of the Month on daily morning announcements and in the monthly recognition assemblies; to promote and develop student leadership opportunities; to focus on improved student performance through constant review of teaching methods and identification of effective best practices in all curriculum areas; to promote learning through the Arts.

Our Poetry Club
Our belief that Literacy is foundational to student success is woven through many of our extracurricular activities. Our poetry club for our primary classes provides our students with the opportunity to enjoy a form of reading and writing that is both within our curriculum and beyond. We examine how form and meaning are connected. We host guest poets and performers.
