The JK-Gr. 5 student population represents 47 countries.
We are committed to providing every student with a high standard of education through excellence in teaching and the promotion of strong community partnerships.
Goals:
1. Improve student achievement in literacy and numeracy
2. Ensure a safe and caring school environment
3. Work in partnership with our parents and our community
Our School
Thorncliffe Park P.S. was built in 1961. To accommodate our growing population, a large addition was officially opened on October 23, 2003. Some highlights of our new facility are: a large muscle area and exercise/play courtyard for Kindergarten students; three gymnasiums; an advanced library system with indoor / outdoor theatre; and, several enclosed courtyards with gardens for hands-on environmental studies. As of September 2008, artificial turf and a running track were added to our site.
Focus on Literacy
We are committed to building a solid language foundation for all of our students, many of whom are newcomers to Canada. We recognize that it often takes five to seven years for a student to become academically proficient in a second language. We use a variety of strategies and supports to develop literacy in all its forms.
Literacy
-Implement balanced literacy block for all students
-Model and explicitly teach reading comprehension strategies
-Continue to augment school library resources
-Continue Ontario Focused Intervention Partnership (OFIP) to consolidate and strengthen our capacity to provide effective literacy programs and interventions
Numeracy
-Incorporate the use of Math Learning Carpets and a variety of manipulatives to teach and reinforce numeracy skills
-Update resources
-Provide professional development to refine teachers' skills in the areas of planning, delivery and assessment
