"Our school motto is " Together We Succeed."
Built in 1952, Parkside Public School is located on Cedarvale Avenue. Its name comes from its location on the edge of Taylor Creek Park which gives the school a quiet park-like setting in the middle of the city. Parkside offers classes from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 and includes a Home School Special Education program. A Metro Child Care is located on site offering programs to children 2 1/2 to 9 years of age. Our co-curricular activities enhance school programs and help to build stronger links with home, school and the community.
Character Education
At Parkside E.S. Character Education is an integral part of what we do. Every month one of the ten attributes are highlighted in each teacher's classroom and unit plan. The attributes help to build teamwork, create a positive school culture, an orderly and safe environment. Our students are recognized at monthly Parkside Stars Assemblies for displaying positive behaviours. Students are encouraged to solve problems using peaceful discussions.
School Focus:
Parkside as a school has three priorities that include improvement in literacy and mathematics achievement along with the encouragement of more socially responsible behaviour. Through our involvement as an OFIP (Ontario Focused Intervention Partnership) school and a SIM school we have, with the assistance of the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat and our Family of Schools Literacy and Numeracy Coaches implement measures to improve literacy and numeracy achievement for all our students. These measures involved job embedded intensive professional development workshops that use well researched and evidenced based literacy teaching strategies.
Nutrition Program
At Parkside E.S. we have a Nutrition Program in which all students have an opportunity to participate in our mid morning meal. Students are introduced to healthy foods from the Canadian Food Guide.
Special Education
We have three Special Education classes to meet the needs of our students with exceptionalities. At Parkside, we have two Intensive Support Programs and a Home School Program. We also offer a Reading Recovery Program which provides intensive reading support for our grade grade one students.
The Arts
Parkside E.S. values the arts throughout the curriculum. We have a music teacher that teaches our students vocal music as well as how to play the recorder. Our school have two choirs (primary and junior).
Athletics
Our students are involved in a variety of sports and clubs. Each year we participate in a Cross Country Meet, Jump Rope for Heart and the Terry Fox Run. Some of our students participate in Basketball Club, Soccer Club and tournaments as well as in the TDSB Track and Field meet.
