2012 Parent Census

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has released overall findings from the 2012 Parent Census. Close to 90,000 Grade K-6 parents participated in the Census. The results from this Census together with the findings from the 2011 Student Census are important to informing how communities support youth in Toronto.

The first Parent Census was conducted in 2008, with several new policies, programs and partnerships introduced as a result of its findings. The success of these initiatives is seen in the 2012 data with a significant increase in parent confidence in the TDSB and an increase in parents attending parent/teacher interviews, school meetings and events.

93% of parents say they feel welcome in their child’s school and 92% of parents feel their child is treated with respect in their school.

The findings also tell us that 97% of parents feel that their child is safe in their classroom and 88% of their children are getting the supports they need.

We know that TDSB students are benefiting from the programs and supports we already have in place, but the results of the Census highlight what we still need to do to help our students succeed and make our system even stronger.

For the first time the Parent and Student Census provides data on our student’s social and emotional well-being. These results are driving and shaping our Mental Health Strategy. This strategy will strengthen the supports that we already have in place to support our students and staff.

Working with students, staff, parents, and community members we will continue to provide the right supports so that every student can achieve their full potential.
