TDSB Results of the 2005-2006 EQAO Assessment of Mathematics in Grade 9

In January and May/June of 2006, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) administered assessments in mathematics to Grade 9 students across Ontario. Students enrolled in Grade 9 applied and academic mathematics courses in the first semester wrote the assessment in January. Students enrolled in second-semester and full-year courses wrote the assessment in May/June. The assessment required approximately three hours to administer. At the time of the assessments, the TDSB had 13,690 Grade 9 students in academic mathematics courses and 6,551 Grade 9 students in applied mathematics courses.

The assessments measure how well students have met the provincial expectations in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10: Mathematics. EQAO develops separate versions of the assessment for students in applied and academic courses. Approximately 40% of the items are common to both assessments because some of the expectations overlap. The assessments include multiple choice questions, a short-answer component, and questions that require extended written responses.

Student performance is evaluated using a four-level scale that is consistent with the four levels in The Ontario Curriculum.

  • Level 4 is above the provincial standard.
  • Level 3 is the provincial standard set by the Ministry. This standard represents a high level of achievement equivalent to a mark between 70% and 79%.
  • Level 2 is below but approaching the provincial standard.
  • Level 1 is below the provincial standard.

Teachers were given the option of marking all or part of a student’s work and including the mark in the student’s final grade for the course.

Summary results are reported using two methods:

Method 1 includes all students in the school, Board or province. In addition to the percentage of students at each of the four levels, percentages are reported for exempt, no data and not enough evidence for Level 1. Not enough evidence for Level 1 includes students who provided enough information to score but produced work that was below Level 1.

Method 2 includes students who actually took part in the assessment and produced at least some work that could be scored. Students are excluded from these calculations if they were exempted or had no data.

Action

TDSB staff will review and analyse the results to develop a Board Action Plan that will be submitted to the EQAO. Each school will analyse its own results and develop a School Action Plan with strategies to improve student achievement. This process will be done through the School Improvement\Business Budget Planning Process.

The TDSB has also produced a School Profile for every school. These profiles are used annually to report to parents on each school’s EQAO results as well as other details regarding school plans, programs, services and student population. Results for each school in the TDSB is posted on the TDSB’s web site at http://www.tdsb.on.ca/schools/school_profiles.htm.
