Design Consultations and TDSB Approvals Process

In March 2015 the TDSB approved new guidelines for school funded and partner funded projects. A key component of these guidelines is the requirement of viability reviews for large complex school-funded projects. Use the chart below to determine if your project requires a Design Consultation or a Viability Review.
Complete a Design Consultation request form if your project involves: Complete a Viability Review request form if your
school-funded project involves:
  • Planting trees, shrubs, and gardens
  • Building seating or other structures
  • Large scale maintenance of an overgrown area
  • Creating a Master Plan (a vision for school ground revitalization over multiple years)
  • Large projects that require a significant capital investment (involve detailed design solutions and extensive construction)

Design Consultations

Before planting trees, shrubs, and gardens, building seating or other structures, schools need Board approval. The approvals process requires a design consultation with our own School Ground Design Consultant, Gail Bornstein whose experience with school ground design will help you make the most of your project. She will meet with school ground greening committees to help develop design concepts, answer questions, and provide expertise in horticulture, maintenance, and tree stewardship.

Consultations are held on Tuesdays. Due to the limited number of spaces we encourage you to book your visit early. Once the spaces are filled we will begin booking for next year.

Is your school ready for a design consultation? Review the Design Consultation and Board Approvals process information package.

To request a design consultation, complete and submit the request form included in the information package.
