Celebrities Join Student-Inspired Campaign to Raise Awareness for People Living with Autism

Earlier this year, Northern Secondary students Mia Kibel, Emily Albert and Carly Fleischmann, along with their teacher Fiona Leishman, decided to do something to help raise awareness for people living with autism.  The result was the 6° Project.

Based on the premise that everyone is connected through 6 degrees of separation (the notion that everyone in the world is connected by no more than six social links away from everyone else), the goal of the campaign is to get people to talk about autism to spark a wave of education, awareness, and support for people living with autism.  The project aims to get celebrities to wear a blue scarf to show their support for autism awareness.

So far, the project has been an enormous success. Thousands of people have visited the website, 'liked' the Facebook page and joined online conversations about autism. To date, 400 scarves have been sold, and already Michael Buble, Arlene Dickinson, Brad Fay, Rita Cosby, Bob Rae, Rick Hansen, the entire L.A. Kings Hockey Team, Dr. Travis Stork, Neon Trees, and Our Lady Peace have agreed to wear the blue scarves. More celebrity confirmations are coming in every day!

“We are trying to motivate people to truly understand what it means to live with autism and to encourage people to be slower to judge and quicker to accept others for their unique strengths and challenges,” said Mia. To join in the conversation, visit www.thesixdegreeproject.com.
