Style and Substance: the Raptors deliver at Silverthorn |
Representatives of the Toronto Raptors recently visited Silverthorn Community School for an entertaining afternoon of cool basketball moves and inspiring messages. Students, dressed in their finest Raptors gear, gathered in the school gym which was transformed into a Raptors wonderland. The visit is part of the Raptors education and community outreach program Shape Up, a program stressing the importance of healthy eating and fitness. Up first was the Raptor mascot! After teaching students various basketball skills and showing off some cool moves, Jamaal Magloire, a former Toronto Raptors player and TDSB student, took to the stage. Jamaal spoke to the students about the importance of doing well at school and respecting their parents and teachers. John Lucas III and DeMar DeRozan, two current members of the Toronto Raptors squad, joined Jamaal on stage to blistering cheers from students and staff. Their message to the students was to put school first, stay active and keep fit. “The Toronto Raptors visit was an inspiring afternoon that Silverthorn CS won’t soon forget,” said Tony Di Biase, Silverthorn Principal.
