Hundreds of elementary school students from across Ontario recently competed at the 2012 First LEGO League Ontario East Provincial Championship. Among those students were nine teams from elementary schools across the Toronto District School Board.
The TDSB has partnered with FIRST Robotics Canada for over 10 years now, with both a high school and elementary school program. First LEGO League (FLL) is the program designated for students 9 to 14-years-old. The competition requires teams to strategize, design, and build robots using LEGO technology. Each team robot competes against each other in various challenges and missions. This year’s theme was to create innovative solutions for challenges faced by seniors.
We are proud to announce that two of our teams received significant awards at the provincial Championship. Teach Royalty from Bowmore PS won the Mechanical Design Award and Spirit of Friendly Conquer Chickens from John G Althouse Middle School took home the 3rd Place Champions Award.
“This was the first time Bowmore PS had advanced to the provincial final” said Principal Thelma Sambrook. “Winning this award was a huge surprise, the students celebrated with plenty of high fives and cheers.”
“We are all very proud of both our teams! Under the tireless dedication of our Vice-Principal and Parent Coaches, the students worked extremely hard and it paid off. It was a long day for everyone, but the students learned a lot and had fun,” said Principal Corinne Promislow. “One team placing in the top 10 and the other earning 3rd place in the Province was an incredible honour and very well deserved!”
