TDSB Pilots Eco-Partnership Program that Turns E-waste Recycling into Trees

During November and December, 15 schools participated in an Eco-pilot program to promote student environmental learning and provide an opportunity for student action while involving the community.

EcoSchools and Business Development in partnership with Artex (TDSB approved-ewaste recycler) brought to the students and other partners, a growing awareness about electronic waste and the need to deal with it responsibly. The students felt empowered as they did their part for the environment and their community.

Artex bought the e-waste and the money is targeted for TDSB Environmental Legacy Fund projects, such as the replacement of 6500 school ground Ash trees that will die within the next few years. Turning e-waste recycling into trees for generations to come is a noble cause that gives an added purpose to this recycling effort.

"Thanks to all of our student and staff volunteers for helping out on E-Waste Day. It was a great day, as the Westwood community came together to help our environment,” said Helen Fisher, Principal at Westwood Middle School. “We collected 4 huge skids of e-waste along with two skids of television sets. Remember an ecoschool is a cool school.”
