TDSB Students Remain Strong in Literacy, Maintain Solid Test Results |
Students from the Toronto District School Board remain strong in the area of literacy according to information released today by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).
Results from the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) show that the Board has maintained a pass rate of 81 per cent, while the provincial pass rate decreased by one per cent to 82 per cent, narrowing the gap between the provincial and TDSB pass rates.
The OSSLT is only one of several indicators that are used to measure student progress at the secondary level. Other indicators of success include Grade 9 and Grade 10 credit accumulation, subject completion rate, graduation rate and post-secondary destinations.
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test measures how well students are meeting provincial expectations in reading and writing ability. “Our strong pass rate shows that supports such as the Re-engagement Program, our Before and After School Literacy Tutorials and many other literacy initiatives are working. We also know it shows where we must continue to focus our attention to help students who are struggling.” - Chris Spence, Director of Education, TDSB Quick Facts - Nearly 17,000 students participated in the OSSLT this year
- Since 2001/2002, the TDSB pass rate has increased from 71 per cent to 81 per cent
