Honouring the Life of Lincoln Alexander

The Toronto District School Board is truly saddened by the loss of former federal MP and Lieutenant Governor Lincoln Alexander, who passed away earlier today at the age of 90.

Alexander was a trailblazer who broke down barriers, said Dr. Chris Spence, the TDSB’s Director of Education. “I am saddened by the loss of a true lifelong advocate for youth and racial issues. Mr. Alexander was a critical part of the fight to eliminate racism throughout our country.”

He was Canada’s first black MP, representing Hamilton West for four successive elections from 1968 to 1980. In 1985, Governor General Jeanne Sauvé appointed Alexander the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. He became the first black person to serve in a vice-regal position in Canada and is a member of the Order of Ontario and a Companion of the Order of Canada.

“Mr. Alexander was a groundbreaker and tireless supporter of human rights and helped create a better country for your children, my children and generations to come,” Dr. Spence said.

The TDSB is joining the Ontario government in honouring Lincoln Alexander by flying all flags at half-mast from today until sunset on Friday, Oct. 26, the day of his funeral.
