Toronto Marlies Hockey Club Visits Second Street Junior Middle School
Duke the Dog and the three Toronto Marlies players visited Second Street Junior Middle School to support ‘Going Green’ in partnership with EcoMedia Direct - the largest public space recycling program in the world. Students got a lesson about the importance of preserving the environment and learned ways in which they can reduce reuse and recycle in their own homes and classrooms. “Take care of the earth, kids – it’s the only one we’ve got,” Toronto Marlies goaltender Scott Clemmensen told a gymnasium full of enthusiastic students. “We need to make sure that we leave it clean and healthy for future generations to come.” A representative from the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) expanded upon that message. “This event will help create increased awareness and participation in future recycling efforts and the further minimization of solid waste materials away from landfills," said Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director, of the Recycling Council of Ontario. St Godard went on to commend the TDSB, the Toronto Marlies and EcoMedia Direct for the interactive approach to Public Space Recycling at the elementary school level. Students at the hockey-crazy school then took in a lesson on the ‘what goes where’ of recyclable items and enjoyed the experience of learning from some of their favourite athletes. But the most important lesson of the day was that kids, and role models, can make a difference. Last Updated: Wednesday, November 28, 2007
