Celebrating Asian Heritage Month at Maplewood HS

This month, staff and students at Maplewood High School are celebrating Asian Heritage Month.

The Maplewood community, led by Ms. So, Ms. Hamel, Ms. Wong, and Ms. Hargraft, has once again come together to create colourful display cases, showcasing traditional Asian garments, Asian artifacts, and Anime. One of the showcases is called "Connected to Asia," which highlights how each person - Asian or otherwise - is connected to Asia.

Every Wednesday in May, the main lobby is transformed into an Asian Marketplace, where students and staff can try Asian snacks such as Dim Sum and Samosas, watch musical and dance performances, learn how to make Sushi, or take the Chopstick Challenge to learn how to use chopsticks. Mr. Beer and Maplewood's Food School are preparing Asian lunches too. In addition to these Wednesday activities, students and staff are encouraged to wear traditional Asian clothing throughout the month.

Students will continuously learn about Asia through student announcements, interactive home form activities, Adopt-an-Asian-Country Decorating Contest, and presentations created by staff and students on the large-screen TV in the main lobby.

And, as a Gold-Status Eco School, all posters and many of the decorations and artwork were made from recycled materials.
