English as a Second Language/English Literacy Development
| The Toronto District School Board is the most multilingual and multicultural school board in the world. More than 50% of our students speak a language other than English at home. Some of our English language learners have arrived in Canada from other countries; others are born in Canada and first start learning English when they begin school. We provide a variety of programs and services to support these students. For example: - English as a Second Language (ESL) programs help students learn English
- English Literacy Development programs (ELD) help students who have recently arrived from countries where they did not have regular or consistent access to school
- LEAP Programs (Literacy Enrichment Academic Program) in selected TDSB schools provide an opportunity for accelerated literacy and numeracy development to students aged 11- 18 who have gaps in their prior schooling
- Newcomer Reception Centres located at four sites around the city provide an in-depth assessment of the English language and mathematics proficiency of recently arrived secondary school students, and offer helpful information and advice about the school system.
- Translation and Interpretation Services help schools and teachers to communicate with families.
- Multilingual Education Services provide first language assessments in a variety of languages for students who may be at risk or who may have learning exceptionalities.
- International Student Services provide counselling and placement services to international students.
