Welcoming Communities for TDSB Newcomer Youth & Kids

Welcoming Communities for TDSB Newcomer Youth & Kids program is a structured 8 week Mentorship program for newcomer students in TDSB schools. This program provides mentorship opportunities, where newcomer students are matched with local students to help them ease the transitional challenges to Canada and the school system, through supervised group activities.

The program provides coordinated activities such as homework clubs, cultural interactive activities, English conversation circles, professional table tennis training/tournaments, volunteer recognition ceremonies and field trips that highlight the unique features of Toronto and Canadian culture.

This project works collaboratively with the existing settlement workers within TDSB schools and school administrative staff. Our school-linked approach provides a holistic service delivery model that involves students, parents, educators and community partners.  Working together, Welcoming Communities for TDSB Newcomer Youth & Kids delivers a mentorship program that provides our young learners with an opportunity to become familiar with community involvement and community resources, receive settlement support and learn leadership skills.

Welcoming Communities for TDSB Newcomer Youth & Kids operates in alignment with the TDSB Vision of Hope implemented by our Director of Education, Dr. Chris Spence.  The Vision of Hope is to create full-service schools which offer support to students beyond the classroom. Settlement services are a key component of this vision. Our aim is to create a learning environment that enables TDSB newcomer students to successfully integrate into Canadian society, the Canadian school system and to foster the promotion of Canadian citizenship.
