How do I locate a French Immersion or Extended French school?To locate a French Immersion or Extended French school you will need to confirm your English school based on your home address. After you have confirmed your English school, complete the following steps to show the list of schools with the different programs in your area. How do I apply for a Junior Extended French or a Middle French Immersion program?The application process for both Junior Extended French and Middle French Immersion programs is now completed on-line.The application process opens on November 16 ,2009. It is not a first-come, first-served process. The deadline for application is December 18, 2009 and all applicants who apply by that date will be considered on-time for placement. Parents can review the status of their application at any time on line. All communication will be through email for notification of placement. |
What if I have a child already in a French program? Can my child attend the same school as their older brother or sister?Yes. Siblings of students who are currently attending a French Immersion or Extended French school and who will be in attendance the following year will be placed in a French Immersion or Extended French program with their older brother or sister. If the older child has left the school or the program, the younger child will not have a priority placement. If you are requesting a placement in an English program at the French school for a sibling of a student attending the French program, you will need to follow a different process. Requests for placements in the English program at a school are made through the procedure called Optional Attendance. For information about Optional Attendance contact your child's school. |
What is Optional Attendance for French As a Second Language programs?If you wish your child to attend a French Immersion or Extended French program outside of their French attendance area, you may apply to another school under the TDSB Optional Attendance rules. Please note that admission to a school or program under optional attendance is subject to the policy and procedures outlined in the TDSB Optional Attendance policy and procedures. Optional Attendance applicants are not eligible for transportation. |
How do I apply for the Early French Immersion program?The application process for the Early French Immersion program begins in January. It is not a first-come, first-served process. The deadline for application is February 5, 2010. Information packages will be distributed to all Junior Kindergarten students in the TDSB during the first week of January. Application forms will also be made available on this site under Application Information during the first week of January. Early French Immersion Application Forms must be completed and returned to either the school your child is attending or the Early French Immersion school in your area by February 5. Parents/guardians will be notified of placement by the French program school in March. |
Are any of the applications for Early French Immersion ( SK entry) programs completed on-line?For September 2010, there is a group of Early French Immersion schools who will be accepting on-line applications only. If your home address is in one of the French catchment schools for the Early French Immersion program at Howard PS, John Fisher PS, John English PS, Owen PS or Runnymede PS, then you will apply on line. The deadline for the application is the same as for the paper forms, February 5, 2010. |
How do I apply for a Grade 7 Extended French program?The application process for the grade 7-entry Extended French program begins in January. It is not a first-come, first-served process. The deadline for application is February 5, 2010. Information packages will be distributed to all eligible Grade 6 students in the TDSB during the first week of January. Application forms will also be made available on this site under Application Information during the first week of January. Grade 7-entry Extended French Application Forms must be completed and returned to either the school your child is attending or the Extended French school in your area by February 5. Parents/guardians will be notified of placement by the French program school in March. |
Is transportation provided for students attending a French program?Transportation is provided according to the Transportation Policy of the TDSB. For further information regarding the Transportation Policy check on the TDSB website. Transportation is not provided to students who are attending a French program under Optional Attendance. Students attending a French program in Senior Kindergarten - Grades 5 who live outside 1.6 km walking distance from their home to the French Immersion/Extended School are eligible for transportation on a school bus from a pick-up point determined by the Transportation department. This is usually the student's home English school. Students attending a French program in Grades 6-8 who live outside 3.2 walking distance from their home to the French Immersion/Extended school are eligible for TTC tickets. Students attending French programs who are eligible must apply for transportation through the French Immersion/Extended school

Do I or does my child need to speak French to apply for the Immersion/Extended French program?The French Immersion and Extended French programs are designed for students who do not speak French at home. The program is structured to help students build their acquisition of the French language at the same time that they study the other subjects in French. |
Is my child guaranteed a place?For students applying to the Senior Kindergarten or Grade 4 entry programs, who have submitted an application on-time, there is a guarantee of placement in the Program but not in a particular school. The placement may be offered at any school with space in a geographic area near to the student's home address. Students who are placed outside the 1.6 km walking distance of the French school will be eligible for transportation. Placement for Grade 7 entry programs is based on available space. |
