TDSB Student Safety Line

For the new 2008-2009 school year, the Toronto District School Board’s Student Safety Line program (www.tdsb.on.ca/safetyline) has launched a new online form as another way for students to report safety concerns.

Based on the success of the pilot program 416-395-SAFE launched in January 2008 and responding to the needs of students, the TDSB established the new internet form to reflect the way students communicate today. The telephone line, 416-395-SAFE will continue to be available to students during the school year.

To submit an online report, click on the Submit Online button above.

Students!  Just for You

What is it?

The Student Safety Line is an anonymous way for you to tell someone about your personal or school safety concerns. The Student Safety Line will help make our schools even safer, fairer and more caring learning environments for everyone.

How does it work?

When you call 416-395-SAFE (7233), you can leave an anonymous message with information for the TDSB to follow-up OR you can submit an online report by logging onto www.tdsb.on.ca/safetyline and clicking on Submit Online. You do not need to give your name to make a report. You can leave a voice message and submit a report without anyone knowing or finding out who you are. Messages and online submissions are checked regularly during the school day.

When should I use the Student Safety Line?

You are encouraged to use the Student Safety Line whenever you hear, see or experience something that threatens the safety and welfare of anyone at your school. You can make reports about threats, suspicious activities, violence, physical assaults, weapons, intimidation, bullying, sexual harassment or anything else that worries you.

  • What about 9-1-1? In an emergency, you should call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • What if I need to talk to someone? You can contact the Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 for counselling support.
  • What if I have information about a crime? Call Toronto Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

Although we always encourage students to talk to an adult they trust, the TDSB Student Safety Line is another way to help students report school-related or personal safety concerns.

Frequency Asked Questions

1.  Q. When do I use the TDSB Student Safety Line, and when do I call 9-1-1, Crime Stoppers, or Kids Help Phone?
A. The TDSB Student Safety Line provides students with another option to report personal or school-related safety concerns in an anonymous way. In an emergency, everyone should use 9-1-1. You can contact the Kids Help Phone for counselling support, and Toronto Crime Stoppers to report information on crimes.

2.  Q. When I call, will there be someone for me to talk to?
A. The TDSB Student Safety Line phone number is directed to a voice message system only. You will be asked to leave an anonymous message with as much detail as you are comfortable leaving.

3.  Q. Can I make a report online?
A. Yes. By logging onto www.tdsb.on.ca/safetyline students can submit online reports that are also monitored daily. These reports are entirely confidential.

4.  Q. Will my identity remain anonymous?
A. Yes, all individuals who have submitted reports will remain anonymous. The TDSB Student Safety Line does not trace calls, does not have call display and has no way of determining your location and you do not need to leave your name.

5.  Q. What happens to the information left on the TDSB Student Safety Line? Will police get involved?
A. All messages are taken seriously. If the information provided requires follow-up or investigation (based on credible and specific information), the pertinent details will be provided to the school principal. If the information involves harm to a student, danger to others or poses a safety risk or crime, the TDSB will act according to Board policies and procedures and/or to disclose required information to the proper authorities (police or outside agency).

6.   Q. Will my principal find out what I reported on the TDSB Student Safety Line?
A. Should the information left on the message require follow-up or investigation, the Student Safety Line administrator may provide pertinent details to the school principal so that the issue can be looked at and any required actions taken. The identity of the caller (if known) will be protected in accordance with policies and procedures.

7.   Q. Will parents be contacted?
A. Parents or guardians of any students identified in a report submitted by a student may be contacted by the school principal should a review or investigation (based on credible information) be in the best interest of the student or students involved.

8.   Q. My school already has a hotline – which one am I suppose to use?
A. Several secondary schools in the TDSB have successfully implemented school-specific student hotlines. The Student Safety Line provides all TDSB students another option to report concerns in an anonymous way, especially when students are uncomfortable reporting concerns or incidents within their current school environment.

9.   Q. Can I report concerns that happen outside of school?
A. Yes. All student safety concerns are important, whether they happen on school property or not.

10.   Q. Can I use the Student Safety Line to complain about a teacher or other school staff?
A. If you have a complaint not related to safety, you should talk to an adult that you trust.
