Greenwood Secondary School is one of the oldest schools in North America designed specifically for newcomer high school-aged students. We welcome you to our small, nurturing community. Our English as a Second Language (ESL) school provides you with a special opportunity to gain intensive English language skills in an intimate environment while you earn your high school credits. We provide learning activities to meet your individual needs. We help you prepare to move to the high school of your choice and complete the necessary high school credits to earn your diploma. 2012-2013 Special Features
Learn English from teachers who are qualified ESL and subject specialists. We provide language acquisition and educational upgrading in a supportive atmosphere. We offer semestered, credit programs at ESL A, B (1 and 2) & C levels, generating four credits per semester; earn 2 math credits per school year - intensive language proficiency program - ongoing instruction in use of library and information technologies - a language lab to assist with English language acquisition; activities are run every lunch hour as well as morning and after school.
Continuous Intake
Continuous entry into our program is a key feature of the school. We welcome students who are new to Canada. If you are between the ages of 13 and 21, we may be the school for you. We can help you develop the four language skills in English essential to thriving in Canada, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Specialized CO-OP Program for ESL Students
Students are placed in neighbouring schools, local business and community partnerships to help with language aquisition while earning credits, gaining valuable work experience and testing future careers.
Language Enrichment Academic Program (LEAP)
We offer two different Literacy Enrichment Academic Programs (LEAP) for students with gaps in their education. One program is designed for students under 16 years of age. Student Service and Support Program
Our Student Support Program gives students full access to a range of services including a guidance counsellor, on-site settlement workers, on-site school nurse and an on-site assessment centre. Read more about Student Service and Support Program
Facilities
We maintain technical facilities to support you in our programs. We have three computer labs, a gymnasium, a cafeteria and a life skills classroom with kitchen facilities. We are home to a specialized English as a second language (ESL) library filled with many resources that can help you learn English. Read more about Facilities
