At YMCI, there is a strong emphasis on academic achievement, student success and post-secondary preparation. The school has a long history of excellence in academics, performing and visual arts, athletics and community involvement. We are proud to be a dual-track school offering French Immersion, Core French and Spanish. An extensive English as a Second Language program is also available. The students and staff of York Mills are proud of their school and of their culturally diverse backgrounds. Everyone works together to create a learning environment that is safe, nurturing, positive and respectful. At York Mills, the staff, parents and community partners work together to support the growth and achievement of all students.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many support services the school offers. These include our Guidance and Special Education departments, the Student Success Team, social worker and Peer Tutoring. Our Information Centre (library) is a vibrant setting where students can study, read, meet with others or conduct research using online technology. Numerous scientific, literary and scholarly online data bases are available for student use. YMReads, a school wide literacy initiative promoting positive reading habits takes place each day for 20 minutes.
All students are encouraged to participate and develop their leadership skills through the co-curricular program. There is a high level of student involvement in the arts, athletics, clubs and community service. We have a huge variety of clubs (60 and growing!) and any group of three or more students can create a new club. Our clubs include: the school newspaper, Spectrum Yearbook , Best Buddies, Ambassador, Math, Spanish, Life Science and many more.
